Joseph
Francis Thomas Tinneny, son of William and Mary Ellen
McShane Tinneny of County Cavan, Ireland and London,
England served on active duty in the Royal Air Force,
Volunteer Reserve, from March 1, 1943 to January 19, 1947. He held the rank of Aircraftman 2nd class (AC 2).
He was
stationed in Canada for 8 months part of which was for
training. He attended the No 5 Bombing and Gunnery
School, Dafoe,
Saskatchewan,
July 3 - September 22, 1944, where he completed the
Bomber and Gunnery Course.

In Joseph’s “RAF Certificate
of Service and Release” his commanding
officer commented: “This Airman has carried
out his duties in an exemplary manner. His
service is without blemish. He has always
shown above average intelligence and his
bearing, efficiency and dependability are of
the highest order.”
Joseph was the grandson of
Robert and Bridget Rooney Tinneny of Belturbet, County Cavan; great-grandson of Francis
and Anne Elliott Tinneny of
Belturbet and great-great-grandson of Thomas
Tinneny of
Goladuff, Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh,
Northern Ireland. |

Note: Following his discharge
from the RAF Joseph studied for the
priesthood. He was ordained a Catholic priest
in the Franciscan Order and spent more than
50 years as a missionary in India where he
died in November 22, 2009. |
