James Tinneny (1888-1964) was the son of
Thomas Tinneny and Bridget Gilmartin of Belturbet. James enlisted in the British
Army in 1915 and served until the end of World War I in 1919. Jim was assigned
as a sapper with the Royal Engineers, he was first based at Chatem, England,
then was reassigned to France where he saw a great deal of combat. In France he
fought in battles including the Somme, Passchendaele (also called the second
battle of Ypres) and at Arras.
